More than 13% of employees in the Netherlands experience unwanted behavior from colleagues or supervisors. The consequences are significant; for employees, it leads to health issues and, for companies, it results in reputation damage, absenteeism, and unrest.
Victims of unwanted behavior become less proactive and report sick more often. Absenteeism is on average 7 days per year higher than normal. In many cases, failing to properly handle a report of unwanted behavior can lead to long-term disability, compensation payments, or dismissal. Besides the negative human impact, this costs the organization a lot of time and money.
The statement that “13% of employees in the Netherlands experience unwanted behavior from colleagues or supervisors” comes from the National Working Conditions Survey (NEA) by TNO and CBS. This annual survey provides insights into the working conditions of employees in the Netherlands. The 2021 results show that this percentage has been consistent for several years. Unwanted behavior includes bullying, discrimination, aggression, and sexual harassment.
